Our 14th season concludes with one of opera’s darkest and most psychologically rich stories, Verdi’s Don Carlo, not seen in Pittsburgh for 30 years! A tale of sacrifice and betrayal, Don Carlo exists in a world where love has been sacrificed to power, idealism crushed by institutions, and every character must reckon with the life they chose. Verdi’s passionate and powerful score, sung by an outstanding cast of internationally acclaimed artists, makes this an experience you won’t want to miss.

About the Show:
When Don Carlo, heir to the Spanish throne, falls passionately in love with Elisabetta of Valois, their future seems assured, until politics intervenes. Elisabetta is given instead to Carlo's own father, King Philip II, to seal a peace treaty between Spain and France. What follows is a collision of personal and political forces, as Carlo's impossible love, his father's jealousy, the scheming of the court, and the iron grip of the Spanish Inquisition drag every character toward tragedy. His loyal friend Rodrigo fights for the freedom of the oppressed people of Flanders; the jealous Princess Eboli, whose love for Carlo goes unreturned, sets a catastrophic chain of events in motion; and the Grand Inquisitor looms over everything, a terrifying embodiment of institutional power unchecked by mercy or conscience.
Resonance Works brings this monumental work to an intimate stage, placing audiences inside the drama. Leading an internationally acclaimed cast is Robert Frankenberry in the title role, alongside Natalie Polito as Elisabetta, Sergio Martinez as the tormented King Philip, Joshua Jeremiah as the idealistic Rodrigo, and Paul Chwe MinChul An as the chilling Grand Inquisitor. Making her Resonance Works debut is mezzo-soprano Leah Heater as the passionate and dangerous Princess Eboli.
